The past few weeks have been pretty hectic for Pokémon TCG fans and collectors. Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters were released, and preorders for the next series, Journey Together, were taken. Unfortunately, due to limited supply and scalpers, not everyone can enjoy these new sets.
Pre-orders for the upcoming Journey Together set—which features the return of Pokémon trainers—sold out in less than an hour. The official website of Pokémon. And try as I might, I’m having no luck trying to find the current Prismatic Evolutions set, which launched last Friday.
Prismatic Evolutions is a special pack that focuses on all eeveelutions. There is a rare art secret for all eeveelutions, with Umbreon now Up to $1,950 in the resale market. Eevee sets usually do remarkably well on the secondary market – we saw similar prices for some full art in Evolving Skies a few years ago. So Prismatic Evolutions is kind of the perfect storm with huge hype and it’s special package.
The problem with special packs is that you can only get them in special collections like Eliter Trainer Boxes or Booster Bundles, which are more expensive than your average collection, and even for these, there is usually a limited amount of stock. Due to the huge demand, which was mainly due to scalpers trying to get their hands on what was initially thought to be a Prismatic Evolution drop, most shops were unable to get in any stock.
This means that while there are many Elite Trainer boxes available on the resale site for double the original price, there is almost no stock left online or in stores. Initially I thought about grabbing the box to resell, but I hate the idea of giving money to scalpers, because it will only encourage them. Also, I can’t believe the Elite Trainer Box is worth over £100.
Fortunately, I will not have to buy from scalpers. The Pokémon Company announced that, to help with supply, it will release a new edition of Prismatic Evolutions.
“We are aware that some fans may have difficulty purchasing certain Prismatic Evolutions products at launch due to high impact demand,” said the Pokémon TCG’s official X account. “We understand that this inconvenience can be disappointing for fans, and we are working diligently to reprint affected Pokémon TCG products as soon as possible and with the highest ability to recognize this. Reprinted products are expected to be available at participating retailers immediately. This is possible to help ensure fans have the opportunity to access Prismatic Evolutions. We thank the community for their continued support and patience as we work to deliver this highly anticipated expansion to fans.”
This announcement has an immediate impact on resale prices, as many players, like myself, are happy to wait for more stock to come out rather than pay double to get a box now. Originally, some Prismatic Evolution boxes were £100+, but now they’re down to £70-£80. It is honestly wiser to hold the stock for a long period of time, as this kind of growth will become more valuable over time, but many scalpers cannot wait that long to sell the product.
Unfortunately, the Blooming Waters series hasn’t had the same kind of luck so far, as this is just the last stock of 151 to hit the shelves. If you follow the Pokémon TCG, then you’ve probably seen them all Video who came out of the United States late.
