EA announced today that it is revising its forecast for the fiscal year after Global Football’s net subscription growth slowed, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard missed the company’s internal targets by nearly 50%.
In a press release, The company said it is reducing its expectations for the fiscal year ending in March of 2025 from mid-single-digit growth to a mid-single-digit decline. The biggest culprit, EA said, was global soccer, aka EA Sports FC, which it said experienced a decline last year in Q3 after two consecutive fiscal years of double-digit net subscription growth. In a press release, EA CEO Andrew Wilson specifically pointed to EA Sports FC 25 as underperforming.
But in addition to the World Cup, EA also mentioned that Dragon Age “engaged” 1.5 million players during the quarter, which is a decrease of almost 50% from the company’s estimate. Notably, EA didn’t say the 1.5 million was unit sales – Dragon Age: The Veilguard is also available as part of EA’s Play Pro subscription service. Additionally, it is unclear whether EA is counting the 1.5 million free trials of games available through the cheaper EA Play subscription.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard releases on October 31, 2024, and EA’s report only covers the last quarter of the year through the end of December, meaning these engagements cover the game’s first two months on the market. It’s worth noting that 1.5 million (or thereabouts) isn’t a terrible sales number, and companies overestimating sales targets are nothing new. In its first three days on the market, The Veilguard managed to debut at No.6 on Circana’s chart for best-selling games in the US, and that doesn’t include Steam digital sales. However, analysts we spoke to in November suggested that Veilguard has a tough road ahead:
“Just looking at the first day of sales and initial engagement levels through Circana’s player engagement tracker, it’s a good launch – but not great,” said Mat Piscatella at Circana. “Dragon Age: The Veilguard didn’t reach the opening week sales levels of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth or Dragon’s Dogma II, and it will be a bit of a struggle to reach Inquisition’s lifetime sales.”
There is smoke around Dragon Age: Battle of the Veilguard, such as the fact that it received a significant discount just a month after its launch for Cyber ​​​​Monday, and the departure of director Corinne Busche, from BioWare just last week.
