I didn’t like Pimax Crystal Light the first time I wore it. This headset is clunky and bulkier than many of the best VR headsets for gaming right now, and even things like plugging it into its own power outlet and connecting it to my PC’s DisplayPort feel more restrictive and old-school than many would. expected now. Of course, these can be a necessary part of getting this lovely screen, and this is where the trade-offs of high-end VR will be. You just have to hope that the experience is good enough to handle that extra bag, both in terms of space and your wallet.
Taking it out of the box, the Pimax Crystal Light is quite scientifically beautiful, with a main screen in a case that is not only wide but also contains a mass of bezels.
The front of the headset has silver-like accents, which reminds me of LeVar Burton’s character in Star Trek: The Next Generation or, perhaps a little cooler, a medieval knight. I don’t feel particularly cool in the headset, mostly because that look comes with the groan of getting the cables the right way so the whole headset doesn’t feel too complicated.
Although you can do little things like repositioning the lights to make it feel a little better on the head, I found the Pimax Crystal Light to be uncomfortable at all. The shape around the head is good and the cushioned face plate does a good job of offsetting some of that weight but it is very heavy. I still felt the horrible pressure in the nose that is common with VR but, within 20 minutes, started to feel it all over my face.
Specifications of Pimax Crystal Light
You can lighten the weight, or add extra straps for balance, but playing with this headset wears me out quickly. As such, the included strings are even tighter when you realize that everything is proprietary.
There’s only one cable that can’t be removed from the headset without tearing it, which not only limits how far you can walk away from your gaming PC, but also means that a pesky cat biting the wire can see the end. All things.
This also makes troubleshooting more difficult as there are three separate cables to unplug and plug back in, the power plug, USB-A and DisplayPort. Since it depends on those specific ports available on your rig, this makes VR gaming on a gaming laptop more difficult.
However, even if you manage to get the adapter into DisplayPort and install the VR headset all ready to go, you have to consider the implementation. At 2880 x 2880 impressive on the eyes, you need something that can display all that information directly to your headphones. Fortunately, Pimax does what it can to support that graphics intensity with a static display.
Without eye tracking as found in the standard Pimax Crystal, this instead chooses to give what is in the center of the headset with higher fidelity, with what is outside it of lower quality. This performance technique can be obvious when you try to find it but most of the time it works well to get more performance from your rig.
To put the 2880 x 2880 resolution into context, this is one of the highest resolution VR headsets on the mainstream market, behind Pimax’s 8K and 12K headsets and Varjo’s XR4.
It is placed in front of Varjo Aero and Varjo VR-3. At its price point of around $800, it more than beats their price tag, though it’s a pretty big investment to make in a VR headset. This is a decent price point for high-end VR.
The Mini-LED aspheric lens in the Crystal Light is nice and bright, but to use this technology over the popular pancake model is attached to the mass in the headset itself at 815 g (29 oz) in total. Yes Meta Quest 3 Still not light at all. 300 g (11 oz) shell out of this.
Unfortunately, this means that in active games such as Hit Saber And Synth Riders, I feel myself constantly fighting the weight of the headset and the pull of the cable. It’s attached to the headset itself, which helps reduce some weight but isn’t enough to stop me from getting into the habit of just holding the cable while I play. Playing the Nyan Cat theme on Pistol Whip is hard enough without headphones still working on me.
However, the headset is much better in slower games like A Fisherman’s Tale, Red Matter, and Vacation Simulator. The clarity of the lens adds a lot of play and the wide FOV of 115 degrees is perfect for immersive games. This gives me the single best reason to choose Pimax: racing sims and cockpit games.
This feels like a headset intended for the likes of F1 22, Dirt Rally 2.0, and even space exploration games like No Man’s Sky and it makes a lot of sense when you’re in your gaming chair.
The extra FOV helps realize the size and space of cockpits and driving games, a genre that has always managed to look very nice and feel particularly sharp. I can see how long term discomfort makes endurance races more difficult, but it’s fine while sitting for a few races.
The swap from the base station to the internal tracking is smart, as it makes the setup process a bit easier, but the tracking itself is mostly good. Passthrough was grainy and black and white and I lost touch with my controller at times, though not nearly enough to cause any real problems with the gameplay.
The controller is mostly good, taking after seeing the Meta Quest 2 controller with its distinctive ring design, but feels lighter and less durable. They feel very plastic, but mostly comfortable in the palm.
Buy if…
✅ You are a sim racer: The clarity of this headset is great and, due to the size, weight, and need to be tied, you will not notice its shortcomings as much behind the wheel in the cockpit.
✅Budget headphones aren’t clear enough for you: You notice how fast these headphones look. If you want the best, this is a great way to get it, as one of the highest resolution lenses on the market.
Don’t buy if…
❌ You are an active VR gamer: The Pimax Crystal light is big and clunky, and because of that, never felt secure when I was bobbing and moving around. In light exercise, it is good, but if you are jumping and ducking, it is not is quite comfortable.
❌ You don’t have a good rig: VR can be a bit of a challenge to run on a regular rig, but the increased clarity of this headset means you need something lighter.
The Pimax Crystal light has some feel to me, though not nearly as much as the Pimax Crystal. Cutting out some of the things that make the Pimax Crystal so expensive, such as its single mode, but maintaining high resolution, a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, and a Mini-LED display, this leaves the main competitor in the niche but lacking a lot of punch. Overall feeling and intuitiveness.
For a moment, with the cable wrapped around my arm or on the chair I was sitting on, I saw a vision here. The clear visuals, high FOV and good refresh rate make for a lifelike VR experience that is mostly confined to the station. However, I’ve always used VR as a way to blow off steam or think about things after a long day and the setup process, comfort, weight, and general versatility of the headset all felt like it defeated that purpose.
With the Pimax Crystal Light, I feel like I’ve played the best VR headset of the past few years, but, outside of some specific use cases, there are a few headsets that I’ll reach for this one, though. It means to downgrade the image.
On the plus side, I need less raw computing power for it as well. If you don’t mind me being a tough headset or just gaming with a cockpit, this headset is worth a look but, as a more general device, this. Pimus The device is Crystal Clear but not much Light.
