The cannibal wood of the Sons of The Forest has been quiet lately. After a wildly popular early access period, it launched in February last year, with developer Endnight Games providing frequent updates over the first four months after release. However, the studio has been largely silent since the quick fix in June, with no updates, announcements, or even tweets in the last half of 2024.
That’s all changed now. On Wednesday, the Endnight game released a monster of a patch, adding several important features to its survival, making numerous system improvements such as improving the placement of weapons and expanding the boundaries of the world, and fixing the score of bugs.
Sons of the Forest’s main new addition is a “buildable 3 ship” with docks to stop them from drifting into the ocean. In its Steam announcement, the Endnight game didn’t provide much information about the rafts beyond the fact that they exist, but a YouTube video posted by the unrelated Sons of the Forest Channel provides more insight into these makeshift vessels. Players can build small and large rafts that are exposed to the elements, as well as a houseboat that comes with a cozy roof area. All three rafts can be equipped with useful survival equipment such as beds and chairs made from human bones, while players move them across lakes and oceans with wooden sticks.
Along with the rafts, the update adds a “holder” structure for the glider and the Knight V electric unicycle, and a new step system for placing protective walls. According to Endnight, this system allows you to “draw where you want the wall and let Kelvin finish”. Kelvin is the human companion of the game.
That’s it for all the new stuff, but Endnight also makes a lot of adjustments to how Sons of the Forest works. Aiming has been improved for numerous weapons – namely crossbows, compound bows, craft bows, shotguns and slingshots – while arrow flight paths have been improved to “match the path when shooting the bow”. The map is even bigger, with Endnight expanding the boundaries of the world to give your newly made ships more room.
Capturing is a veritable bug fix, fixing everything from sleepy icons to dead bodies. Among these are some particularly fun examples. “Fixed Cannibal jaws sometimes look incorrect during death animation” conjures some amusing images, while I’d like to imagine a discussion around “Fix the French locale for ‘brain bin'”. What I like, however, is “the player will not be cold or freeze in the cave of hell”. Frankly, this is the least I would expect from a hell cave.

I played a fair chunk of it during early access, and dug its precise crafting system, but never returned for the full release.
