As Marvel Rivals continues to climb the Steam and Twitch charts, one issue has fans wondering how to spend their time with NetEase Games’ new hero shooter: bots.
The multiplayer experience in the superhero-themed competition launched in December to acclaim and praise from fans due to its style and creative use of characters such as Spider-Man, Wolverine, and, most recently, the Fantastic Four. It’s so successful that hundreds of thousands of gamers still play Marvel Rivals every day on Steam alone (via SteamDB). While NetEase’s new hero shooter has managed to avoid some of the pitfalls that have plagued other competitors in the space, fans have spent weeks raising concerns about how enemy AI is handled across its many game modes.
“I know people may have different feelings but playing with bots in (Quickplay) just doesn’t feel right to me,” one Reddit user commented. “AI should be in AI mode and that’s it.”
Like many other multiplayer games released over the past 15 years, Marvel Rivals offers an action mode that makes it clear that players will compete against what many call “bots.” These AI-driven competitors often have difficulty adapting to user preferences, making these modes a valuable tool for those looking to improve their skills or cool off between more intense matches against human players. Where Marvel Video Games is running into trouble is the appearance of what many believe to be bots in standard Quickplay matches.
For weeks, social media has been abuzz with messages from users concerned about being thrown into matches with low-level bot players, with some reporting that their teammates have even been replaced by bots from time to time. The jury is out on what makes these bot matches, but the working theory is that Marvel Rivals will pair players into these easier matches after too many losses. It’s a tactic that can make players feel so defeated that they quit the game, and it may allow users to load into Quickplay matches without delay instead of sitting in long queues.
Unfortunately, there’s been little transparency from NetEase about which players are bots or if there are bots in the Quickplay tournament at all – and the company has been silent so far (IGN has asked for comment). More than a few posts have been burning up on social media in the weeks since launch as players try to establish what are and aren’t red flags in hopes of finding their own solutions. Examples include strange but repeated in-game behavior with similarities between teammates’ names, including team names that are full of one word and uppercase or all names split between one full name and one half name. The most telling sign, is when all enemy occupations are labeled “restricted.”
“The fact that you can get a game bot after winning and the game doesn’t tell you that you are against bots is what made me know about this,” Reddit user said. “You don’t want to learn a new hero in comp because people will get mad at you for doing that, but if you try to learn a hero in (Quickplay) now you have to second guess if you’re going to get better at that. hero or if the game just makes you think you are because it gives you free wins in the form of bots.”
The use of bots in multiplayer games is far from new; Players have been arguing about how bots can affect their Fortnite performance for years. For Marvel Rivals, some have called for an option to turn bot matches on or off, while others want to remove the feature entirely. There is also a selection of players who don’t mind fighting lobby bots from time to time, explaining that they use these matches as an opportunity to complete some hero achievements. Reddit user ciaranxy started questioning some of their matches shortly after the launch and Created a message asking the community to do the same.
“So, you can choose to believe this is a problem or not – that’s your choice,” ciaranxy said in the post. “But – for others – when you click Quickplay, NetEase doesn’t give you a choice.”
If you’ve been playing Marvel Rivals for more than a few hours since launch, there’s a good chance you’ve found yourself in the lobby with questions that have gotten everyone else fired up. I can confirm running into at least one questionable Quickplay match that features more than the elements players have been warned about, including solid player dynamics, similarly structured names, and three-person teams and all enemy teams with limited profiles. We have reached out to NetEase for clarification on the tournament involving players and the alleged presence of bots in Marvel Rivals.
While users flock to investigate bots throughout the game, you can learn more about How some Marvel Rivals players use Invisible Woman to literally stop bots in their tracks. With or without resolving this new controversy, NetEase is planning for a bright future in 2025, starting its plans with The Fantastic Four Season 1: Falling into Eternal Night. Creative director Guangyun Chen also has Promise to deliver at least one new hero every half seasonAnd later this month, fans can expect to pick up new skins In the form of Peter Parker’s Advanced Suit 2.0 from Marvel’s Spider-Man.
