Porting Doom to inappropriate platforms is one of the Internet’s hobbies. Devices compatible with id Software’s Certain FPS currently include Lego bricks, pregnancy tests, and player pianos. One brilliant PhD student even demonstrated Doom in intestinal bacterial cells, making the shooter a true cultural phenomenon.
Now, an enthusiastic high school student has expanded the Doom platform even further, successfully consigning the FPS to the PDF pile. Doom’s latest strange port, creatively named DoomPDFYes Work of github user ading2210, who describes himself as “a high school student interested in programming, web development, and cyber security”.
Porting Doom to PDF files is possible, ading2210 says, because the PDF file format supports Javascript. Indeed, they point out that the full features in Adobe Acrobat “have some amazing things like the ability to display 3D”. In theory, this makes porting Doom to PDF relatively straightforward. However, ading2210 points out that “in Chromium and other browsers, only a small number of these API pages are implemented.”
As for how they approach the port, they say that compiling it to run is easy enough, as well as facilitating keyboard input, as “Chromium’s PDF engine supports text fields and buttons.” Getting the game to work satisfactorily within the file is “very challenging”, however, which ading2210 explains as follows:
Previous interactive PDF programs I’ve seen use individual text fields that are on/off to make individual pixels. However, Doom’s resolution is 320×200 which means thousands of text fields would have to be shuffled every frame, which is impossible. Instead, this port uses a separate text field for each line on the screen, then sets their contents to various ASCII characters. I managed to get a 6-color monochrome output this way, which is enough for something readable in the game.

The results of ading2210’s work can be played here, although make sure you are using the Chromium browser before clicking on the link. It’s an impressive technical feat, but as ading2210 admits, DoomPDF isn’t very fun to play. Visually it’s just clear enough to see what’s going on, but from a control point of view, DoomPDF is extremely unresponsive. Hitting a single target is difficult, while fighting a large group of monsters is near impossible.
Incredibly, this isn’t the first time someone has ported Doom into a software bundle. A few years ago, game developer Sam Chiet ported Doom into Notepad, with better results. Of course, you’ll need to squint like you’re chopping an onion to analyze what’s going on, but Notepad Doom is slicker under the fingers than its PDF cousin. Of course, it’s only a matter of time before some bored computer gets Doom running in Word, and I’ll be the first to produce a Doom framework in Wingdings.
