What is the Nintendo Switch 2 release date?

There has been a lot of speculation about when 2025 Nintendo plans to release the Switch 2. The trailer gives us no new insight into that, only confirming what we already know – the system will hit stores at some point this year. So when does 2025 Switch 2 really drop?

The original Switch launched on March 3, 2017, after being first revealed in October 2016. Will Nintendo follow a similar schedule this time around? If so, it will Release Switch 2 around May or June 2025which is consistent with previous rumors.

At this point, all we know for sure is that the system will not be released before April 2025. What are the exact dimensions of the Switch 2?

One of the biggest takeaways from the Switch 2 trailer is that the new console is not only more powerful than its predecessor, but bigger, too. All signs point to this being a more important piece of hardware than the original Switch.

The trailer gave us no indication of what technology the Switch 2 is using, so this is another area we’ll have to wait until the next Nintendo Direct to find out more about.

Which games are not backwards compatible?

Nintendo eased fears by confirming Switch 2 will be compatible with most original Switch games. These OG Switch games, whether in print or digital download, will work on the new system. That makes it much easier to commit to the new console.

That said, the trailer includes a disclaimer that not all Switch games will be compatible with the new console. Which game will not work in the new system? Are we talking about Switch games that require original Joy-Con controllers like Ring Fit Adventure or Nintendo LABO? Or is there another hardware limitation that we don’t know about that will prevent certain games from coming to the new system?

Will the original alternate game be updated?

It’s good to know that most of the original Switch games will work on the new console. Still, it begs the question of whether Switch games will actually perform on Switch 2. Will the experience be the same, or will Nintendo use upgraded hardware to increase frame rates and otherwise improve graphics?

Given how intense a game like Tears of the Kingdom is screaming for how much horsepower it has, we have to assume that Nintendo has some plans to offer an upgrade to the original Switch game. But will it be as simple as loading the old Switch cart onto the Switch 2, or will gamers have to pay for an upgraded, updated version? And if it’s the latter, will it be in the form of a paid download, or will they have to buy a new version of the game? Basically, what investment are we looking to make if we want to play Tears of Kingdom remaster?

What new functions does the Joy-Con have?

Rumors have suggested that the new Joy-Con controller will be slightly upgraded in the Switch 2. Those rumors were sparked by the trailer, which confirmed that the new Joy-Con has special buttons and will be attached to the console magnetically instead of through. Rail.
