Dragon Age: Veilguard director Corinne Busche is reportedly leaving EA-owned BioWare.
Eurogamer sports Busche, who directed Dragon Age: The Veilguard from February 2022 until its release last year, is reportedly set to leave the studio in the coming weeks. IGN has asked EA for comment.
There have been questions about Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s success since its launch last October. Eurogamer reports that while Busche is leaving the studio, it is not affected by other changes.
Busche joined BioWare in 2019 after a stint at Maxis, where she helped design systems on The Sims project. As part of IGN’s article, ‘How BioWare finally brought Dragon Age to the finish line after a tumultuous decade,’ we detailed the game’s near-decade development, which included a major overhaul that saw it shift from a skeletal multiplayer game with repetitive quests, a technology base, and a story arc, to a fully-fledged single-player RPG. Busche, as director, helped bring Dragon Age: The Veilguard through the wire during the last few years of development.
Eurogamer reported that Busche’s departure from BioWare was unrelated to the commercial operation of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. EA has not yet said that sales and earnings have met or exceeded expectations. The company is expected to report its Q3 2025 financial results on February 4.
Meanwhile, BioWare has confirmed that it has no plans for Dragon Age: The Veilguard DLC. Instead, it turned its attention to Mass Effect 5, which the studio has teased at various points over the years but has yet to properly reveal.
In August 2023, coincidentally the same month that Larian’s all-conquering Dungeons & Dragons RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 was released. BioWare has laid off about 50 employeesIncluding long-time veterans like narrative designer Mary Kirby, who has been with BioWare since the beginning of Dragon Age.
At a higher level, the hiring came amid an internal shakeup at EA that resulted in it being split into sports and other things. That summer, rumors spread within BioWare that it was about to be acquired. Star Wars: The Old Republic is allowed into the third partyObviously BioWare can focus on Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
BioWare’s rollercoaster ride continues through the release of Dragon Age in 2024. Reaction to the initial reveal trailer was negative, sending the studio scrambling to release an early gameplay trailer a few days later to comfort fans. The name change from Dreadwolf to The Veilguard was not particularly well received. After that, though, generally the impression is positive.
Now Dragon Age fans are wondering if BioWare will get a chance to follow up on The Veilguard with the next Dragon Age sequel?
