It’s hard not to feel a little disappointed by Nintendo’s announcement on Thursday of the Switch 2. The fact that the company seems to be playing it safe with its most conservative new console in years isn’t too surprising. What is surprising is how little self-disclosure there is. But maybe that’s because, for obsessive technology, the video released by Nintendo seems eerly familiar. The brief three-minute trailer does not seem like other console games revealed; Instead it looks almost like the sizzle reels Apple trots out for the new iPhone of each year.

Nintendo adopting Apple’s strategy makes natural sense. While most of the giants of the technology industry have turned to software and applications as their main business model, with an emphasis on hardware that borders on complacency, Apple is the last large company to adhere to the hardware-first approach. What it wants to sell you is not a service, it’s a laptop, a tablet, and, most importantly, a phone.

A quick look at the gaming industry will tell you that Nintendo is in a very similar position. While Sony is throwing as many first games as it can on PC, and Microsoft is telling everyone that what they own can be an Xbox with Game Pass, Nintendo is still in exclusive games and selling consoles. Therefore, it seems that Apple’s console manufacturers have received Apple-style commercials.

The Switch 2 trailer hits all the right spots: it’s beautifully shot, with smooth transitions that show the subtle changes between the original Switch and the new one, complete with the device’s elegantly widening and color-matched bezel. The console’s new magnetic Joy-Cons even seem to have Apple’s MagSafe DNA at first glance. But while this all works perfectly for a phone that gets a new model every year, it ignores the fact that the Switch 2 isn’t just an iPhone upgrade. What the video refers to is something that is strictly repetitive, in the form of a telephone. Nintendo’s video literally takes an old device and morphs it into a new one. So, it’s no surprise that some viewers feel they haven’t seen the next Nintendo reveal.

For all the ways Apple invests in people buying the new iPhone, it has the luxury of taking those purchases for granted. It is known that not everyone will upgrade their phone every year, but eventually almost all iPhone users in the world will get a newer phone; It is the model on which all businesses are built.

In a world where upgrading is inevitable, repetition is enough. But I still want Nintendo to sell me something. It’s been eight years since the Switch came out, and while some of its open-world offerings have begun to chug, the real need for upgrades is unclear.

The glossy, fuzzy, beautiful, attractive, and slightly hollow video is perfect for the technical talks from Apple execs that usually come after an iPhone unveiling. But Nintendo’s version does not come until the Nintendo Direct on April 2, where we will have to hope that the company will reveal why it thinks we want to buy this new console – beyond the revelation of anodyne look. Like Apple, Nintendo is historically not a stupid company. In fact, it is often a very successful and intelligent company.
